My name is Kate Petit, founder and formulator of KP Apothecary, a small-batch skincare company based in Saco, Maine, in the heart of Southern Maine.

Long before tallow skincare became a trend, plants, herbs, natural remedies, and whole-body wellness were simply part of my life.

A Childhood Rooted in Herbal Medicine

My education in herbal medicine didn't begin in a classroom. It began when I was a child.

My mother was a midwife, and some of my most meaningful memories with her involved gathering plants, learning their uses, and understanding that when and how you harvest an herb matters just as much as the herb itself.

By the time I was six years old, I was helping gather herbs like squawvine & nettles; two of my mom's favorite herbs for her pregnant mamas. I learned that different parts of a plant are harvested at different times, that roots, leaves, and flowers each have their own purpose, and that herbs could be prepared as tinctures, teas, infused oils, salves, and other traditional remedies.

That knowledge became part of the way I understood the natural world.

Years later, it would become the foundation of KP Apothecary.

A Lifelong Connection to Healing

My path eventually led me into healthcare, including years spent working as a midwife, supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth, postpartum care, and some of the most vulnerable and transformative moments of their lives.

I also studied Human Biology in college, which gave me a deeper understanding of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and the way the human body functions.

Throughout it all, my connection to herbal medicine never went away.

The traditional knowledge I grew up with continued to exist alongside everything I learned about the human body, and I never saw the two as opposing worlds.

To me, traditional herbal knowledge and modern understanding can coexist.

That belief — along with a lifetime of working with and learning from plants — is still at the heart of everything we make at KP Apothecary.

The Healing Journey That Changed Everything

KP Apothecary didn't begin because I decided one day that I wanted to start a skincare company.

It grew out of a much more personal journey.

When my son began dealing with significant health challenges, I found myself going back to everything I had learned over the years: researching ingredients, looking closely at environmental exposures, reconsidering the products we used every day, and returning to the herbal traditions I had known since childhood.

I became even more conscious of how many products contain long ingredient lists filled with things that serve the formula, the shelf life, the texture, or the marketing — but don't necessarily serve the person using them.

I wanted something different.

I wanted products made with simple, purposeful ingredients.

And eventually, the formulas I was creating for my own family became something bigger.

KP Apothecary was born.

Today, KP Apothecary creates small-batch tallow skincare and herbal skincare right here in Saco, Maine.

For our tallow-based formulas, we use grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow, including nutrient-rich kidney suet tallow, paired with thoughtfully selected cold-pressed oils, botanical ingredients, herbal infusions, and essential oils.

But tallow is only one piece of what we do.
