Herbal Rescue Balm: From Childhood Staple to Everyday Essential
When we were little, my mom found a balm in a health food store called Comfrey Salve.
From that point on, it became the balm in our house.
Cuts, scrapes, irritated skin, burns, bumps — whatever happened to us, my mom would reach for that little jar. Sometimes there wasn't even much to do for whatever childhood injury we were complaining about, but she would put the balm on anyway just to “make it feel better.”
And somehow, it always made everything better.
We were rowdy kids — and with five brothers, rowdy might actually be an understatement. We were constantly outside, climbing trees, exploring, falling, getting scraped up, and coming home with one injury or another. In our eyes, that Comfrey Salve was basically magic. It was the little jar that came out whenever something hurt, and we became completely convinced that it could make just about anything feel better.
That memory stayed with me.
Years later, as an herbalist and a mother myself, I wanted that same kind of balm in my own home — something made from herbs I knew and trusted that I could instinctively reach for when skin needed a little extra care.
And eventually, Herbal Rescue Balm was born.
Our version begins with six herbs that have been used in traditional herbal preparations for generations: calendula, comfrey, plantain, yarrow, arnica, and St. John’s wort. We slowly infuse these herbs into high-quality botanical oils for approximately three months before pressing the herbs and blending those richly infused oils with beeswax, vitamin E, frankincense, lavender, tea tree, and rosemary.
It isn't meant to recreate the Comfrey Salve my mom found all those years ago.
It is the balm that grew from the memory of it.
The jar you keep within reach.
The balm you grab for the hardworking hands, scraped knees, dry skin, rough patches, and all the little things that happen when you're actually out living your life.
Maybe that's why, in my head, it was always meant to be called Herbal Rescue Balm.
Because that's exactly what it is to me.
A Herbal Balm That Begins Months Before It Reaches the Jar
One of the things that makes our Herbal Rescue Balm different is time.
We don't rush our herbal oils.
Calendula, comfrey, plantain, yarrow, arnica, and St. John’s wort are infused slowly into our oils for approximately three months. This traditional infusion process allows the oil to draw out the naturally occurring plant compounds contained within each herb.
Once the infusion is complete, the herbs are pressed from the oils and the finished botanical oils become the foundation of our herbal balm.
It takes longer.
We think it's worth it.
Calendula: A Classic Herb for Skin Care
Calendula has been used in traditional herbal skin preparations for generations.
Its bright orange and yellow flowers are often infused into oils, salves, creams, and balms designed for sensitive, dry, or irritated skin.
Calendula-infused oil is naturally soothing and moisturizing, making it one of our favorite ingredients for supporting skin that feels rough, dry, or uncomfortable.
It's one of those herbs that has earned its permanent place in an herbalist's cabinet.
Comfrey: Traditionally Used for Hardworking Skin
Comfrey is another herb with a very long history of topical use.
We infuse both comfrey leaf and comfrey root into the oils used in our Herbal Rescue Balm.
Comfrey naturally contains allantoin, a compound commonly used in skincare products because of its skin-conditioning properties.
For generations, comfrey preparations have been applied externally to areas of dry, rough, stressed, or hardworking skin.
Combined with calendula and plantain, it creates an incredibly rich botanical oil infusion.
Plantain: The Humble Backyard Skin Herb
Not the banana.
Plantain — Plantago — is one of the most common herbs growing wild throughout much of North America, yet most people walk right past it without realizing what it is.
Herbalists have traditionally used plantain leaves in poultices, infused oils, and salves for skin care.
Plantain-infused oil is wonderfully soothing and is one of our favorite ingredients for skin that has been exposed to the elements.
It's a perfect example of something we deeply believe at KP Apothecary: some of the most useful plants are often growing right beneath our feet.
Yarrow: A Traditional Herbal Skin Ingredient
Yarrow has been valued by herbalists for centuries and has a fascinating history of traditional topical use.
The flowering tops contain naturally occurring botanical compounds and aromatic oils that make yarrow a beautiful addition to herbal skincare preparations.
When slowly infused into oil alongside calendula, comfrey, plantain, arnica, and St. John’s wort, yarrow becomes part of the complex botanical foundation of our balm.
Arnica: A Favorite Herb for Active Bodies
Arnica is probably one of the best-known herbs used in traditional topical preparations.
It is commonly found in herbal massage oils, creams, salves, and balms intended for active lifestyles.
We include arnica-infused oil in our Herbal Rescue Balm because it pairs beautifully with comfrey, calendula, plantain, yarrow, and St. John’s wort.
Arnica is intended for topical use on intact skin and should not be applied to open wounds.
St. John’s Wort: A Traditional Herb for Topical Care
St. John’s wort has a long history of use in traditional herbal preparations, including infused oils and topical balms.
When infused into oil, the bright yellow flowers create a distinctive botanical oil that has been treasured by herbalists for generations.
We include St. John’s wort alongside calendula, comfrey, plantain, yarrow, and arnica as part of the deeply herbal foundation of our Herbal Rescue Balm.
Why We Use Beeswax in Our Herbal Rescue Balm
Our whipped tallow skincare products are intentionally made without beeswax, but a traditional herbal balm is different.
Here, beeswax serves an important purpose.
Beeswax gives the balm its protective, concentrated texture while helping seal moisture into the skin. It creates a breathable barrier that allows the botanical oils to remain on the skin longer rather than absorbing immediately.
That makes it especially useful for areas that need a little extra protection, including hands, elbows, knees, heels, cuticles, and other dry or weather-exposed areas.
We use beeswax because it belongs in this formula — not simply because it's an easy way to make a product solid.
Vitamin E for Additional Skin Conditioning
Vitamin E is one of our favorite additions to oil-based skincare.
It helps condition and soften the skin while complementing the nourishing botanical oils used throughout the formula.
We use high-quality vitamin E as part of the finishing blend before our balm is poured into jars.
Frankincense Essential Oil
Frankincense has been treasured for thousands of years and continues to be one of our favorite ingredients in skincare.
Its warm, resinous aroma blends beautifully with herbal preparations, and it is widely used in natural skincare for mature, dry, and weathered skin.
Frankincense appears throughout many of our KP Apothecary formulas because we simply love what it brings to botanical skincare.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender may be one of the most recognizable herbs in natural skincare.
Its calming aroma is only part of the reason we use it.
Lavender essential oil has a long history of topical use and pairs beautifully with calendula and the other infused herbs in our balm.
It also softens the stronger herbal aroma of the infusion and gives the finished balm its gentle botanical scent.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil has become a staple ingredient in natural skincare products around the world.
Its fresh, herbaceous aroma works beautifully in a multipurpose herbal balm, particularly one designed for hardworking or outdoor skin.
Because essential oils are extremely concentrated, we use them thoughtfully rather than overpowering the formula.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary is another plant deeply rooted in traditional herbalism.
Its bright herbal aroma complements the infused botanicals while rounding out the essential oil blend.
Rosemary has become increasingly popular in modern natural skincare, but herbalists have worked with this remarkable plant for generations.

Why Herbal Oil Infusions Are Different
Many skincare products advertise botanical ingredients while containing only tiny amounts of plant extracts.
Our process is very different.
The herbs themselves are immersed in oils and allowed to infuse slowly over several months.
The oils physically change during the process as they take on the color, scent, and naturally occurring compounds of the plants.
There is something deeply satisfying about watching calendula, comfrey, plantain, yarrow, arnica, and St. John’s wort transform a simple oil into a rich herbal infusion.
It is slower skincare.
And that's exactly the point.
Traditional Herbalism Meets Modern Skincare
At KP Apothecary, we don't believe traditional herbal knowledge and modern skincare need to exist in separate worlds.
Many of the plants herbalists have worked with for generations are now being studied for the very compounds that made them valuable traditional ingredients in the first place.
Our approach is simple:
Use exceptional ingredients.
Respect the plants.
Don't rush the process.
And don't add unnecessary ingredients simply because the skincare industry tells us we should.
Our Herbal Rescue Balm reflects that philosophy from the first handful of herbs placed into oil to the moment the finished balm is poured into its jar.
A simple, concentrated botanical balm made with ingredients we genuinely believe belong on your skin.
